Midwest Hype brought their grooves to the circle city for back-to-back shows this weekend. Last night, at Radio Radio, the funkdafied five-piece headlined after superb sets from locals The Postscript and Red Moon. Their fanbase in our city proved loyal as the men of Midwest Hype played for the first time ever at Radio Radio. Despite a lighter attendance than their typical turnout at The Mousetrap, the fans were real and they came to party.
The trek to Fountain Square ended fruitfully for those who came. The Hype played familiar favorites from their fun, jazzy album Colorful Love, as well as adventurous covers (Notorious B.I.G., 'Big Poppa'; Warren G., 'Regulate'). Rusty Redenbacher stepped on stage for a special rendition of the Mudkid's original 'Climb', after which front man George-Matthew Prellwitz hinted at future collaborations in the near future. “It's comin' big in 2010. That's all I got to say.”
Also in the works for the coming year, are a handful of hot, new tracks. Happy to be the guinea pigs for fresh Midwest Hype tunes, Radio Radio got down and dirty to a new song tentatively titled “Ben's Kitchen Blues”. The spotlight shifted to saxophone wizard Ben Morrissey as he laid down line after line of hip hop rhyme while the band backed him with deep, grimy, blues.
Midwest Hype plays at Booney's in Avon tonight. It's your last chance to catch them in town until March 20 when they return to their familiar home at The Mousetrap. Don't miss another great show with the sexy, funky white boys from La Porte.
My name is Danielle Look. I attend concerts. And then I write about them. My taste is eclectic and focused locally; the shows are more affordable, the musicians are more accessible, and the venues are more intimate.
I support the local music scene. Do you?
