It’s (gonna be) May It’s (gonna be) May

Snarky Puppy: May 13 at the Vogue

To define Snarky Puppy down to a short biography synopsis is near impossible- they image are ever changing, ever morphing to their audience, musical prowess, and individually. Simplified, potentially, down to jazz/funk/global, each album and performance seeks to do something completely new, and take musical performances to new levels.

How do they do it, you ask? For starters, although Snarky Puppy has about twenty key members, the cast of performers is ever changing and different from show to show. imageEssentially just a massive list of desired collaborators, Snarky Puppy picks up different artists for every show, making each performance a unique listening experience- truly an audiophiles dream. And it certainly has not gone unnoticed; between a Grammy award in 2014 for “Best R&B Performance”, a 2014 Downbeat Reader’s “Best Jazz Group,” and a Grammy nomination in 2016 for “Best Contemporary Instrumental Group,” to name a few, it is clear just how far their musical talent ranges.

Their most recent release and eleventh studio album, Culcha Vulcha, is a testament to all of the above. Each song provides a different experience for the listener; “Semente” is primarily jazzy world, “Grown Folks” takes us down the funkier side of Jazz, and “Tarova” follows along with funky global. Each song a bit different from the one prior, a true expression of musical expertise, displayed in ten different snapshots. On stage at the Vogue on the thirteenth, this is one Snarky Puppy performance you certainly do not want to miss.

Altered Thurzdaze w/ Zebbler Encanti Experience: May 19 at the Mousetrap

Each artist brings a bit of their culture with them, adding a world element to this Boston and Valencia, Spain based duo.
ZEE, for short, tours regularly and provides visual components for artists like Shpongle and EOTO, Zebbler has performed as a VJ at many events, and ZEE has toured with EOTO and performed alongside Shpongle’s live band throughout the country.

This performance, is an extra special one for those of us here at Indy Mojo.

Summer Camp Music Festival: May 26-30 at Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe, IL

Since the first run of this festival in 2001, Summer Camp Music Festival has grown quite a bit.
