Constantly changing with the times and progressing with each performance, AK has proven both his staying power and his skill over the years.

Snarky Puppy: May 13 at the Vogue
To define Snarky Puppy down to a short biography synopsis is near impossible- they are ever changing, ever morphing to their audience, musical prowess, and individually. Simplified, potentially, down to jazz/funk/global, each album and performance seeks to do something completely new, and take musical performances to new levels.
How do they do it, you ask? For starters, although Snarky Puppy has about twenty key members, the cast of performers is ever changing and different from show to show. Essentially just a massive list of desired collaborators, Snarky Puppy picks up different artists for every show, making each performance a unique listening experience- truly an audiophiles dream. And it certainly has not gone unnoticed; between a Grammy award in 2014 for “Best R&B Performance”, a 2014 Downbeat Reader’s “Best Jazz Group,” and a Grammy nomination in 2016 for “Best Contemporary Instrumental Group,” to name a few, it is clear just how far their musical talent ranges.
Their most recent release and eleventh studio album, Culcha Vulcha, is a testament to all of the above. Each song provides a different experience for the listener; “Semente” is primarily jazzy world, “Grown Folks” takes us down the funkier side of Jazz, and “Tarova” follows along with funky global. Each song a bit different from the one prior, a true expression of musical expertise, displayed in ten different snapshots. On stage at the Vogue on the thirteenth, this is one Snarky Puppy performance you certainly do not want to miss.
Altered Thurzdaze w/ Zebbler Encanti Experience: May 19 at the Mousetrap
Collaboration project between video artist Zebbler and producer Encanti, Zebbler Encanti Experience offers both an auditory and a visual experience to the viewer, immersing them in psychedelic bass enhanced with mapped visuals on custom winged screens. ZEE, for short, tours regularly and provides visual components for artists like Shpongle and EOTO, Zebbler has performed as a VJ at many events, and ZEE has toured with EOTO and performed alongside Shpongle’s live band throughout the country.
This performance, is an extra special one for those of us here at Indy Mojo.
Terrapin Flyer w/Melvin Seals and Mark Karan: May 26 at the Vogue
In the interests of keeping the spirit of the Grateful Dead alive and kicking, Terrapin Flyer came together in 1999 as a house band for the Sunday Grateful Dead Jam at a cafe in Chicago. They have grown since then, even touring the nation and picking up acts along the way with Greats such as GD keyboardist Tom Constanten, Jerry Garcia Band organist Melvin Seals, and Ratdog guitarist Mark Karan.
Performing with both Seals and Karan the 26th at the Vogue, Terrapin Flyer takes the stage for another great show. Grab your tickets here, and look for the four pack to save some money!
Summer Camp Music Festival: May 26-30 at Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe, IL
Since the first run of this festival in 2001, Summer Camp Music Festival has grown quite a bit. Hosting over twenty thousand attendees with more than a hundred bands on seven stages in three days, Scamp, for short, focuses on delivering that family or at home feel one gets at summer camp. Nearly tripling the little town of Chillicothe, Illinois, Scamp has become one of the best Midwest festivals and boasts incredible line ups every year.
This year, of course, is no different; featuring a little something for everyone, the 2016 line up is stacked. You will want to look over the full one, but look for Umphreey’s McGee, Big Grizmatic (Big Gigantic, GRiZ, and Grimatik), The Roots, EOTO, Lotus, Emancipator, and your home town favorite, Shy Guy Says. Grab your tickets before they are gone, and look out for many of your Indy Mojo team while there!
