July 2017: IndyMojo’s Sensory Overload Month July 2017: IndyMojo’s Sensory Overload Month

How do you take your Thurzdaze? Cream and sugar? Over-easy? Slightly baked? Personally, I like mine fried and saucy. Thankfully, this July IndyMojo is bringing an entire smorgasbord of sensations to Indianapolis served hot, fresh, and however you like it.

Oil up your calendar, because if you’re not properly seasoned, you’re about to be busy as popcorn on a skillet.

Starting on the very first Thurzday of the month, IndyMojo whips up a thunderous casserole of blood, sweat, and bass for an evening with Downlink and Dieselboy. This sure-to-be banger also features a unique pairing between IndyMojo, Dahlia Presents, and Chef’s Night Off; more on that later.

Following that blow-out, other acts breezing through Indianapolis include Ivy Lab, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Infected Mushroom, Muzzy Bearr, and Umphrey’s McGee. IndyMojo’s July is that restaurant your family always goes to because no one can agree on one cuisine, like T.G.I. Friday’s…only classier and not terrible.

Speaking of cuisine, two events this month feature a musical performance and a chance to score a one-of-a-kind mouthwatering meal.

Yes, you read that correctly. There will be music, and dinner will be served.

The first course: Dinner N’ Bass with Dieselboy

A party concocted between the minds of IndyMojo, Dahlia Presents, and Chef’s Night Off. Managed by R.J. Wall, Dahlia Presents is the promotion company that brings the heaviest, most righteous music to Indianapolis from Slayer to Slipknot all the way back to Blink 182.  Also managed by Wall is Chef’s Night Off, another type of event focused around a culinary performance by local chefs. A guest can purchase a ticket to attend any Chef’s Night Off event on their website here. Chef’s Night Off is responsible for the supremely awesome Return of the Mac Macaroni and Cheese festival, as well as the Broadripple Seafood Boil, and a post-winter fest brunch at the Sinking Ship featuring Three Floyds and Sun King.

“The idea is to help cultivate Indy’s food scene and community. To get cooks working with other cooks exchanging ideas, having fun, and talking shit.”

For this event, Chef’s Night Off will be hosting a dinner at The Mousetrap showcasing dishes prepared by Adam Sweet of King Dough, Elliot Checinski of LouVino, and Damian Higgins a.k.a. Dieselboy. The three have prepared a special pizza and snacks menu for the evening which can be found here.

King Dough in Bloomington Indiana serves an enticing lineup of wood-fired pizzas from vegan options to meaty classics, as well as fresh salads and homemade sorbet and gelato. LouVino specializes in southern-inspired small plates and features a bewitching wine list. Damian Higgins, Dieselboy, has participated in culinary competitions as a chef, assisted well-known chefs in Chicago, San Francisco, and New York City, and writes for food blogs such as FirstWeFeast.com

Higgins’ first event, Burger Night with Dieselboy, was held in 2014 in the Netherlands. From then he has participated in or hosted events that blend his culinary and musical passions to perfection, from taco parties with Glitch Mob, to dinners with renown chefs and bartenders all over the country. If Dieselboy is cooking, you better grab a plate.

But the kitchen isn’t the only place Higgins creates masterpieces. Dieselboy, a.k.a. The Destroyer, a.k.a. The Terror on Four Decks, is a drum n bass producer out of Brooklyn and founder of Human Imprint, a drum n bass and EDM label. With an impressive discography and an even more impressive stage presence, a Dieselboy performance is not something to miss.

And to add even more flavor, accompanying Dieselboy will be dirty bass legend Downlink. Also mixing on four decks, Downlink takes the listener on a genre rollercoaster complete with stomach-flipping loops and soul crushing drops. Downlink, a.k.a. Sean Casavant, launched his own record label Uplink in 2013, and has released music on OWSLA and Mau5trap, mixed an album for Korn, and worked with KJ Sawka and Excision in a group called Destroid.

Also on the front lines of the bass battalion for the evening are local favorites jFet, Boss Mode, and Willie Grimez. Tickets for the event including the pizza dinner will be 30$ and can be purchased online. Tickets for the show will be 15$ at the door until they sell out.

It won’t be easy, but try not to overindulge on the first Thurzday of a month full of bangers. Following Dieselboy and Downlink, London trio Ivy Lab joins us at the Trap the following week for another rager to remember. Less than a week after that, Tedeschi Trucks Band, the Wood Brothers, and Hot Tuna roll into Indy on the Wheels of Soul Tour on July 19th at White River.

Next, as promised, another opportunity to dine and dance. Thursday July 20th David Embry debuts his new project Spaghetto at the Mousetrap. Guaranteed to be an enjoyable performance, Spaghetto will be dropping fresh beats while preparing an authentic homemade meal at the same time. Embry is no novice to the Mousetrap stage; he has played in bands from Turbo Suit (formerly Cosby Sweater) to Embryonic Fluid, and now he’s adding a completely new flavor to his mix. Embry has been at work in the studio since his return to Indianapolis and it’s about time we got a sample of what he’s been cooking. Expect to hear some funk, some hip-hop, some slippery bassy grooves, and if you’re lucky you may get to taste some of the famous spaghetti he’ll be whipping up on stage.

Up next, Friday July 21st, comes a type of food you’ll want to consume in a controlled environment, Infected Mushroom! Come get wild at The Vogue and enjoy Infected Mushroom’s DJ set called Return to the Sauce. Infected Mushroom always throws down so come prepared with a fuzzy blanket and a buddy system in place just in case things get too spicy for the pepper.

And finally, for dessert, Umphrey’s McGee at the Lawn at White River. Smooth, creamy, and vanilla just like plain yogurt— ha. Yeah, right. Umphrey’s for dessert tastes more like jalapeño cheesecake ice cream melted over hot cinnamon whiskey apple pie. Yeah, put a slice of that in your ear hole. Umphrey’s has been around for over 20 years and their annual return to Indianapolis is one of the sauciest highlights of the summer. This year they will be joined by Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and as usual, there will be an outrageous afterparty at the Mousetrap to follow. Tickets can be purchased online or at any of the aforementioned Altered Thurzday events.
