Christopher Hitchens Day

Christopher Hitchens was a lot of things to a lot of different people. Writer, English teacher, debater, heretic, and if you were lucky enough, maybe even a drinking partner.

Throughout his long and brilliant career, Hitchens entertained, enraged, and enlightened people on both ends of the ideological spectrum.

Today on his birthday, many people have dubbed the 13th of April as 'Christopher Hitchens Day' (There is a Facebook event page if you are so inclined), and so I thought I would share a few of my favorite clips of the late great intellectual.

Freedom of Speech

At the University of Toronto, Hitchens delivers a masterful comeback to those who would ban speech they do not agree with. Defending men like David Irving, a well-known Holocaust denier, is everyone's intellectual duty he says quite convincingly. Citing John Stuart Mill, he makes the argument that when you censor someone you do not agree with, you are harming yourself just as much as you are harming the person being silenced.

Hitchens does Comedy (NSFW)

This clip makes the cut for a couple of reasons. First of all Hitchens is uproariously funny, managing to get crude while at the same time somehow maintaining a highbrow tone to the whole thing, as only he could.

The other reason is because while interacting with the audience, we are relieved to find that the funny, insightful, and witty Hitchens of the printed page, is the same entertaining person in real life when interacting with an audience. Often times, the people who rely on teleprompters when giving a speech, and the backspace key when writing an article can be mediocre at public appearances, but here Hitchens plays the crowd masterfully, and we even have the special treat of hearing the F-bomb dropped on C-SPAN.

In other words, everybody wins.

Summing it all Up

As everyone knows, the later part of Hitchens' career was mostly preoccupied with the issue of religion and faith.

Watch below as just months before his death, he makes an impassioned defense of freedom of thought, while simultaneously tearing down the idea of dogma, blind faith, and submission to a higher power.

Rest in peace, Hitch.

Rad Summer's first European artist Somepoe released his "Seven Dayz" EP today!

For Rad Summer's ninth release, the young imprint reached across the Atlantic to Finnish producer Somepoe for a 5 track banger. Beginning with the trill inspired "Seven Dayz" and ending with the sentimental "Oulu Theme", Somepoe aka Topi Paananen brings a unique sense of style to his production by combining familiar samples with snapping drums and melodic drums. Unlike much of the aggressive dance music being released currently, "Seven Dayz" gives each track a chance to develop a captivating groove. Sompoe has crafted an EP that is equally worth hearing in a club or through headphones.

Somepoe has been active for sometime now in Finland’s bass music scene. Running the popular club night and radion show Fire In The City has provided the young producer/DJ with the perfect platform to present his unique ear for interesting samples, trap drums, and bass. Topi can often be found rocking crowds with some of the world’s finest dance musicians including Lil Silva, Mensah, L-Wiz, Tes La Rok, Desto, Dj Madd, Bert On Beats, Lady Chann, RSD, and Onra. Recently his track “Kicks and Snares” was featured on Luvstep 3 from Flufftronix, Dirty South Joe, and Cool Records.

Co-directed by Lisa Berlin and Grey Granite, the visuals for "The John Wayne" are a small taste of the antics that these two musicians intend to cause on their pilgrimage to Austin, TX.

DMA aka David Moose Adamson has been a fixture of the international indie music scene for much of the past decade with groups like Jookabox and Big Big Car. The past year has found the multi-talented musician changing directions towards a solo career as DMA. With releases on Asthmatic Kitty and Joyful Noise, Moose continues to be a prolific producer, often crafting some of the most original takes on hip-hop in recent memory. Watch for a full length LP from DMA sometime during the summer of 2012.

2011 was a busy year for Indianapolis emcee Oreo Jones. In the past year, OJ has orchestrated an indie rock collab EP, dropped his highly successful single and video "Cordon Bleu", collaborated with Action Jackson on their smash Black Fabio mixtape, and performed at several of the best indie shows in Nap. Spring 2012 is set to be just as busy for Oreo. Over the next few months, watch for music videos for "Black Fabio", "Reggie Miller", and more, big news regarding Let's Do Lunch, a national tour with DMA, and Oreo's long-awaited debut album.

When I first heard of Luvstep 2 last Valentine's Day on Earmilk.com I was immediately washed away with it. The concept of bringing the best of the best dubstep love ballads and combining them with samples from popular love movies blew my mind. Micheal "Flufftronix" Lindsay and "Dirty South Joe" Joey Massarueh are the masterminds behind this voluptuous mix. I must have played this mix once or twice a month in 2011 and I got the honor of seeing it live last year at OMG! located at the Casba on Wednesday nights in Broad Ripple. This was my first time being in this place and if you have never been there it's a bar located in the basement basement of a restaurant. It definitely set the tone for what was to be a sensual, seductive, and sometimes even a little dirty evening. Last year's mix topped over 50,000 total plays in three days but unforturnately due to Soundcloud unexpectingly taking it down a few months ago we do not have a tally of the total number of views.

Luvstep 3 by Cool Records

The new Luvstep 3 has also made a big impression on me. This mix features some amazing tracks from some of the top producers in the game. Cool Records released the mix last night just after midnight featuring many tracks from the label itself. It has already made some major buzz since going viral. Topping 7,000 and rising fast when I last checked. The mix is available for free download and I suggest you grabbed it up tonight and play it at the earliest covenience, added bonus if listen with a significant other.

Luvstep 3 Tour hits Indy in just 2 days and The Mousetrap is about to get real hot and steamy for this week's Altered Thurzdaze. On just about any Saturday night, you can find Tru Nightclub's resident DJ Jin-XS behind the decks, spinning a lively mix of new and old top 40 hits. But that's not all this talented local plays, in fact, it may be his least preferred genre.

Jin-XS (Nate Cancilla) started off the way many aspiring DJs tend to: Spinning tunes in the comfort and safety of their bedrooms. He had already fallen in love with a broad spectrum of genres including hip-hop, house, industrial and drum and bass, and started off spinning old school hip-hop - typically defined as having been produced between 1984 to 1993. As his skill and his love for the art of mixing progressed, his sets expanded to include downtempo, funk, trip-hop, electro, top 40 and dubstep. These wide variety of influences coupled with his passion to ever improve has led to Jin-XS becoming one of Indy's most versatile DJs, who is comfortable spinning almost any genre, any time, any place.

Rusted Root to Play at Upland Brewing Co.

Upland Brewing Company is bringing international touring act Rusted Root to Bloomington, IN on September 2nd, 2011 for an outdoor concert to benefit Sycamore Land Trust.

Additionally, local favorite TV Mike and the Scarecrows, composed mostly of Bloomington natives currently making a run at Oakland, California’s music scene, will be returning to their hometown to play in the concert, and Bobbie Lancaster will be opening the show. Doors open at 5pm, and music starts at 6.

The Rusted Root concert is part of Upland’s Hillbilly Haiku Americana Music Series: an annual celebration of music, community, the natural beauty of southern Indiana, and craft beer. 100% of profits from the concerts go to Sycamore Land Trust, an organization that works with private land owners to preserve southern Indiana’s natural landscape and provide environmental education. Past concerts have been headlined by Todd Snider and Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band and have raised more than $10,000 for SLT.

Rusted Root has sold more than 3 million albums worldwide. Formed in Pittsburgh by singer/guitarist Glabicki in the early ‘90s, Rusted Root’s worldly style quickly charmed fans of roots music and world rock. In 1994, they released the platinum selling breakthrough When I Woke, which featured the hit songs “Send Me On My Way,” “Ecstasy,” and touring around globe and releasing new albums periodically. Their most recent album, Stereo Rodeo was released in 2009 to great acclaim. News Pop music critic Jeff Miers writes “Rusted Root… knows how to take the singer/songwriter guy’s songs and pump them full of fire and life… These were strong lines with supporting chord
progressions penned by Glabicki, and given abundant support by the [band]…in essence, this was a dance party…the new songs, Stereo Rodeo and Weary Bones, were standouts… Crucible Glow (was) among the most visceral…Glabicki appears these days as an elder statesman of ‘world music’-based rock.”

We had a chance to chat with Charles Stanley, Strategic Projects Manager for Upland Brewing Company..

Mojo: How long have you been doing Hillbilly Haiku Benefit Concert Series?

Charles: This is the 4th annual concert we’ve done to benefit SLT.

Mojo: Why did you choose the Sycamore Land Trust?

Charles: One of Upland’s core philosophies is environmental sustainability. Hosting a fun event that raises money and awareness for a local organization that helps preserve our natural landscape and provides environmental educational seemed, well, natural.

Mojo: Approximately how much have you raised since starting it?

Charles: We’ve raised over $10,000 for SLT over the last three years, and are striving to make each concert more successful than the last.

Mojo: What can people expect if this is their first time at Hillbilly Haiku?

Charles: People coming to the concert can expect good music, good beer, good food, and good friends. We try to keep it simple. The concerts we host to benefit SLT are all about bringing the local community and visitors from afar together to celebrate a good cause and have a great time. It’s an opportunity to enjoy good music, food, and beer with friends. The lineup we have this year is positive and upbeat and we expect to see a lot of dancing this year.

Mojo: What type of food and drink can people expect?

Charles: We’ll have several styles of fresh beer brewed right on site to choose from, as well as menu consisting of locally sourced food to choose from. Vegetarian options will be available.

Mojo: Any other things that first timers should know?

Charles: Come prepared to eat, drink, and have a good time. If you can’t do at least one of those, this probably isn’t the concert for you.
We’ll have a number of comfortable straw bales available for seating, but feel bring your own camping chairs.

We were extremely honored to snag a little time out of DJ Micro’s hectic schedule for a little interview before he takes over the decks tomorrow, June 10, 2011 at Tru nightclub in Broad Ripple. So pay attention as he reveals an exclusive look into his influences, the journey to magnificence, and where he’s headed next.

Just in case you’re in the dark, or need a recap, DJ Micro is a veteran producer and spin master with an extensive and impressive musical history. Specializing in trance, progressive house, and break beats, Micro worked his way from building up the Long Island electronic scene to being an internationally known icon.

We began the interview discussing past and future influences where he named artist such as David Morales, Todd Terry, Deadmau5, and Armin Van Buuren (just to name a few). Some not so obvious influences came from his youth in the 70s where disco was a family affair.

“Disco was a huge influence on me,” said Micro. “My parents used to go out every Saturday night to boogie on down. In the 80s it turned for me to freestyle, Carlos Berrios, Omar Santana, etc.”

This eventually changed with the witness of a Frankie Bones’ performance in 1991. At a small club in New York called The Dome, Micro was inspired to turn to the electronic circuit.

“That week I went to his record store in Brooklyn, NY called Groove Records.”

Once the change was made, Micro became an influential force in Long Island’s scene. The first change he made was convincing club Reign’s owner to surrender one night a week to “techno.” Shortly after, he opened his own “all-techno” club named Caffeine, where he was the resident DJ. This feat exploded in popularity among party kids all across the U.S., and led to Caffeine’s expansion as a recording label and clothing line.

Later achievements include over 13 CDs produced and re-mixed, over half a million albums sold, a DJ Times nomination for “America’s Best DJ,” and another nomination by Club Music Awards for “Best DJ Set.”

Having traveled and played in several cities and countries, it’s certain he would have several stories of chaos. So I asked what one of his most memorable moments was.

“A dude on acid took all his clothes off and was dancing as if nothing was the matter (lol).”

Shifting into current times, the club and clothing line have faded away, but Micro is currently working on the resurrection of the Caffeine recording label. He based his decision on the fact that “the digital age is much more competitive.” His new endeavors include not just exploring new shifts to his own work, but helping up-and-coming talent as well.

When I asked if he had any advice for aspiring talent, he replied, “If you make music, the DJing will come.”

This led into his thoughts on the changes that have taken place over the years as electronic music has shifted from a more underground existence to the mainstream.

“Positively, there are always new people coming in for the experience of electronic music. Negatively, some come for the wrong reasons.”
